BIPOLAR BASICS

Bipolar is a disorder where a biochemical imbalance alters a persons moods.

Bipolar disorder can affect anyone, but it tends to run in families. For example my mother has is along with several of her siblings. In addition her mother has it also. Scientists are trying to determined its genetic link. Some people think it can be caused by irregular hormone production. Everyone on my mothers side of the family has a hypothyroid.  Others think it may be caused by specific chemicals in the brain, and every single one of them is on an antidepressant or is supposed to be.. For those suffering from this disorder it really does not matter. The person suffering from bipolar disorder swings from extreme highs to extreme lows.

FAMOUS PEOPLE WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER

The extreme highs are called manic episodes

During a mania the person may have lots of energy and feel as if they are on a high. They may become obssesed with things such as shopping, sex, drugs, or themselves. Usually they refuse to believe that anything is wrong.

The extreme lows are called depression.

During a depression the person feels guilty for what they did while in the manic state. they are tired and sleep alot. They lose interest in everyday activities and have trouble concentrating. If the depression is not treated it may lead to thoughts, and attempts at suicide.

TREATMENT

Treatment is absolutely vital.

Most people with bipolar disorder can be treated successfully. Medication, education and support from family, friends and a mental health professional can be the key to managing the disorder.
